Overview

Use MagicPixel as an AI pixel art generator directly from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or another MCP-compatible AI assistant. The MagicPixel MCP lets you generate game-ready pixel art, create variations, build directional sprite sheets, browse your asset library, and manage your MagicPixel projects without switching between tools.

Instead of generating an image in a chat and manually downloading and organizing it, your AI assistant can work directly with your MagicPixel account. Ask your assistant to create a character, generate a set of game items, remix an existing sprite, or create directional variations, and the resulting pixel art is added to your MagicPixel library.

Generation

  • generate_pixel_art — Generate new pixel art from a prompt at an exact size, optionally guided by a style reference.
  • generate_variants — Create variations of an existing asset or style reference: recolors, equipment swaps, themes, materials.
  • generate_directions — Turn one sprite into 4-direction or 8-direction views for top-down games.
  • apply_with_ai — Merge a donor asset into a target asset (Apply with AI), with optional fit-to-target sizing.

Library and projects

  • list_projects — List your MagicPixel projects.
  • create_project — Create a new MagicPixel project.
  • list_assets — List library assets, filtered by project or marketplace origin.

  • create_folder — Create an art, component, or reference folder.

Style control

  • list_style_references — List the style references saved in your account.
  • get_style_reference — Fetch a style reference image so the assistant can pick one visually.
  • upload_style_reference — Upload an image as a reusable style reference.
  • get_style_profile — Read a project's style profile (genre, perspective, art style, palette, mood).
  • update_style_profile — Create or update a project's style profile.
  • enrich_prompt — Improve a short prompt using the project's style profile.

Marketplace

  • list_marketplace_assets — Browse the MagicPixel marketplace, including exact-size filters.
  • get_marketplace_asset — Inspect a listing and its preview before buying.
  • purchase_marketplace_asset — Clone a marketplace asset into your library.

Account

  • whoami — Confirm authentication and report the live MCP version.

What can you do with the MagicPixel MCP?

MagicPixel MCP connects your AI assistant to a purpose-built AI pixel art generator for game development.

Generate AI pixel art

Create game assets from natural-language prompts. Generate characters, enemies, weapons, items, props, buildings, tiles, UI elements, environments, and other pixel art assets.

For example:

Create a top-down pixel art blacksmith shop for a dark fantasy game, using a limited 16-color palette.

The generated asset is created through MagicPixel and added to your account.

Create pixel art variations

Take an existing asset and generate variations without starting over. Create different colors, equipment, themes, expressions, materials, or visual treatments while maintaining the original asset's visual identity.

This is useful for creating character skins, enemy variants, environmental variations, item sets, and other game content.

Generate directional sprite sheets

Turn a character or other asset into multiple directional views. Generate 4-direction or 8-direction sprite sheets for top-down games and other game development workflows.

Work with your existing pixel art

The MCP can access assets and projects in your MagicPixel library, allowing your AI assistant to work with the pixel art you've already created. Use existing assets as the foundation for new generations and variations, then keep refining them in the MagicPixel pixel art editor.

Browse your asset library and the marketplace

Ask your AI assistant to list projects and assets in your MagicPixel account, helping you find and manage game art without manually searching through your library. Your assistant can also browse and buy from the MagicPixel marketplace, so an existing asset pack can become the starting point for variations instead of generating everything from scratch.

Check your credits

Your AI assistant can also check your MagicPixel credit balance so you can see how many AI generations are available before creating new assets.

Why use MagicPixel as an AI pixel art generator?

General-purpose AI image generators are designed to create images. MagicPixel is designed specifically for pixel art and game development.

Generated assets are designed to work as game art, with control over pixel resolution, palettes, references, variations, and editing. You can continue refining generated artwork in the MagicPixel pixel art editor, then export or sync your assets into your game project.

Beyond MCP, MagicPixel ships a CLI, a Vite plugin, and a REST API, so generated sprites can land directly in your repository and stay in sync as you iterate — the art workflow lives next to the code, not in a downloads folder.

MagicPixel supports common game development workflows for engines and frameworks including Unity, Godot, GameMaker, and web-based projects.

How the MagicPixel MCP works

MagicPixel uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to give compatible AI assistants access to MagicPixel's tools.

Connect the MagicPixel MCP server once, approve access through MagicPixel, and your assistant can use the available MagicPixel tools during your conversations.

The basic workflow is:

  1. Connect MagicPixel to your AI assistant.
  2. Approve the connection on MagicPixel.
  3. Ask your assistant to generate or manage pixel art.
  4. MagicPixel performs the requested action.
  5. Generated assets appear in your MagicPixel library.
  6. Continue editing, remixing, exporting, or syncing your assets.

Generation can take up to about a minute depending on the request.

Connect MagicPixel to ChatGPT

ChatGPT can use MagicPixel through its MCP connector support.

Open ChatGPT's connector settings, add MagicPixel as a custom connector, paste the MagicPixel MCP server URL, and approve the connection on magicpixel.art.

Once connected, you can ask ChatGPT to generate pixel art and interact with your MagicPixel projects.

Connect MagicPixel to Claude

Claude can connect to MagicPixel through custom connectors.

Add MagicPixel as a custom connector in Claude, enter the MCP server URL, approve the connection, and enable the connector in your chat.

You can then ask Claude to generate sprites, create variations, and work with your MagicPixel assets.

Connect MagicPixel to Cursor

MagicPixel can also be used with Cursor and other MCP-compatible development environments. Cursor requires an additional local proxy configuration for OAuth-based MCP connections.

See the MagicPixel connect guide for the current Cursor configuration.

FAQ

Is the MagicPixel MCP free to use?

Connecting is free and you can browse projects, assets, and the marketplace at no cost. AI generation uses MagicPixel credits — check your balance with get_credit_balance, and see pricing for plans and credit packs.

Which AI assistants work with it?

Any MCP-compatible client. Claude and ChatGPT connect through their custom connector settings; Cursor and other development environments connect through a local OAuth proxy. See the connect guide.

What sprite sizes can it generate?

Exact pixel sizes such as 128×128, 256×256, 512×512, and 1024×1024, plus non-square artboards. Sizes are real logical pixels, not an upscaled illustration — existing artboard dimensions are reused when you generate variations.

Do I own the pixel art I generate?

Yes. Assets you generate are yours to use in commercial and non-commercial games. They land in your MagicPixel library, where you can edit, export, or sync them into your project.

Build game art with AI

The MagicPixel MCP is designed for developers who want to use AI to accelerate game art production without separating their art workflow from their development workflow.

Use an AI pixel art generator to go from an idea to a usable game asset, create variations from existing artwork, build cohesive asset sets, and continue refining everything in a dedicated pixel art editor.

Connect MagicPixel and start generating AI pixel art for your game.
